• Influence, The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert B. Cialdini, PhD.
This book is an oldie, but new to me. Mr. Cialdini originally did three years of participant observation. Though there are thousands of tactics to get to yes, the majority fall into six major categories. It helps me understand why I buy so many boxes of cookies and wrapping paper!

• Crucial Confrontations by Kerry Patterson byJoseph Grenny, Ron McMillan, Al Switzler
My favorite takeaway from this book is challenging (in a good way) each of us to view the situation from the other person’s point of view. “Why would a reasonable, rationale and decent person do that?” I think of this question every time before I speak to our home builder.

• How She Does It: How Women Entrepreneurs Are Changing the Rules of Business Success by Margaret Heffernan
This book highlights stories of women who have succeeded ‘their way” in starting successful businesses. Heffernan identifies patterns that are different from some of the traditional masculine leadership styles. These leadership skills have nothing to do with gender, but everthing to do with successfully understanding how to succeed.
